Duranillin

A small settlement set adjacent to the Beaufort River on the Darkan South Road. The town is approximately 22 kilometres south of Darkan and 13 kilometres north of Moodiarrup. Duranillin is on the Collie to Wagin railway line. The town name comes from the nearby Duranilling Pool and this name is of Aboriginal origin. The town was gazetted in 1918. Government surveyors were in the district as early as 1877

Duranillin - Road Sign

On a drizzly, misty morning, arriving into Duranillin from the south, along the Darkan Road South. A glimpse of the townsite lays up ahead.  April 2012. Photos Ref: DURN001

Duranillin - Store

The Duranillin General Store, Liquor Store and Post Office on Farrell Street. This shop services local residents, surrounding farms and other communities without a store, such as Moodiarrup. The store was built in 1925. Another store building used to occupy this site but it burnt down. From the late 1930's the premises also housed the telephone exchange and served as an unofficial nursing post. Mr Ken Thompson and his wife ran this store for a period of 50 years commencing in 1929. Duranillin - Shed

This dark, wooden shed is set just off to the right of the general store. It was a garage and workshop in days gone by. It was built by Mr Tom Elias in 1949. April 2012. Photos Ref: DURN004

To the left of the general store is the Duranillin Agencies which deals in agricultural needs. April 2012. Photos Ref: DURN005

Duranillin - Hall

Set off the main road, in the north section of the town is what appears to be the local hall. April 2012. Photos Ref: DURN006

Duranillin - Old School Classroom

Across the road from the hall is the disused primary school. Only one classroom remains - in a community this small that's probably all there ever was. A bit of paint could bring this building back to looking good. The school was erected in 1936. April 2012. Photos Ref: DURN007

Duranillin - Old School Classroom

The school again but this time looking at the rear. Lots of water tanks around. April 2012. Photos Ref: DURN008
