Southern Cross Southern Cross is a medium-sized town situated on the Great Eastern Highway between Merredin and Coolgardie, and also on the main east-west rail link. The town is some 370 kms east of Perth. Southern Cross had its origins in gold mining although these days agriculture is predominant. Gold was discovered here in 1888. The town was gazetted in 1890. The town name comes from the constellation by which the early prospectors navigated at night |
