Railway Locomotives in Western Australia

Construction of railways commenced in W.A. in 1871 and in the ensuing decades expanded across the southern part of the state. In those days all locomotives were steam driven. Many were manufactured in England until the Midland Railways Workshops opened in 1904. Diesel locomotives appeared in the mid 1950's which eventually displaced all steam engines. In the Perth area, commencement of electrification of the suburban lines occurred in the late 1980's

Bassendean

S549 "Mountain Class" Greenmount undergoing maintenance. This is one of ten 'S' class locos, all named after W.A. "mountains". Greenmount, Bakewell, Dale, Bruce, Brockman and Lindsay all serviced Bunbury in the 1960's and I saw them. The four others -  Hallowell, Egerton, Gardner and Hardie - must have been based elsewhere as they were not seen around Bunbury by me. September 2011

Bassendean

C1 "Katie". Built in Newcastle-On-Tyne in 1880 and arrived in W.A. in 1881 for use on the Midland-Guildford railway. Retired in 1940 and restored by W.A.G.R. in 1959. It was on display at the Claremont Showgrounds until 1970 after which transferred to Bassendean. September 2011

Bassendean

"Kia-Ora". Built in 1884, Philadelphia USA. Worked in wood milling until 1909, then for Carnarvon Coastal Tramway. Transferred to Bunbury in 1947 and then on to Roelands Quarry in 1955. Retired in 1962. September 2011

Bassendean

Locomotive number 18 inside the shed. No details but by the design this looks like mid 1800's and would pre-date most of the other locomotives in the shed? September 2012

Bassendean

Guard's Van in tip-top condition located near the museum entrance. A interesting sign on the side on the van, "To Be Used Between Cottesloe and Leighton Yards Only". I wonder why? September 2012

Bassendean

MRWA number E30 is a tiny diesel probably used around a mill or for light shunting. It's far too small to be trundling along a main-line. September 2012

Bassendean

Adjacent to the main entrance and signal box is Yx86. It was built in the U.K. in 1888. It spent up until 1944 in South Australia and after that it worked for Bunning Brothers at their Donnelly River timber operations. September 2012

Collie

V1215 at Collie. This locomotive has been restored and re-painted and looks in tip-top condition. This 'V' class is of one 24 which were purchased specifically to haul coal from Collie to Perth. Later they were used more widely. These locomotives were in service from 1955 to 1973. Photo - March 2014

Collie

W948 at Collie. As with V1215, W948 has been restored. These engines were in use throughout the West Australian Government Railways networks as large work-horses. Photo - March 2014

Collie

Fs452 is the re-badged and re-engineered F398 which is now located at Collie. On November 05, 1942, F398 became trapped in the Swan View tunnel as freight had fallen from a previous train. Smoke and fumes rendered the crew unconscious. The final act of driver Spencer Trobridge Beer was to place the locomotive in reverse at speed to get it out of the tunnel. He succeeded. It crashed into boulders at the end of the dead-end siding beyond the western portal of the tunnel specifically built for diverting down-hill runaway trains. Mr Beer perished. The other crew survived. March 2014. Photo - March 2014

There is a "staff" changing machine (a staff was a rod which gave a train driver authority to travel on a particular section of single rail track) to the front/left of picture. Many more of these devices are scattered around this market area. August 2013

Guildford

K205 hauls the Spirit of the West passing through Guildford. This was a restaurant train which ran on weekends between the Perth Terminal in East Perth and Toodyay. It was operated by South Spur Rail Services. The train operated between October 2002 and May 2008. It seems it just became too unecononical to operate which is a great pity because the service won two Gold Plate Awards for Best Tourist Restaurant. The carriages still rest up near the grain storage silos east of Midland. Photo - June 2007
