War Memorials in Western Australia

Australian Federation was achieved in 1901 and almost right from the outset Australian armed forces have been involved in overseas conflicts. These include the Boer War, World War I, Word War II, Korea, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam; and more recently Iraq and Afghanistan. The price of war is always extremely high. Not only for those who are killed in the wars, but also the effect on the fallen's family and community. Here are some Memorials we saw


 
 
 

Albany

Atop Mount Clarence is a prominent war memorial. This is the very top of the memorial structure. The memorial is a grand structure and alas this picture does it no justice. Photo - October 2014

 

Bakers Hill

In Bakers Hill. Well kept, designed and constructed Memorial Mark for Soldiers who fell in conflicts over the decades. Photo - October 2018

 

Beverley

On Vincent Street is the Beverley War Memorial. Photo - April 2015

 

Bindi Bindi

On the Bindi Bindi main street, between the houses and the school is the War Memorial. Photo - July 2012

 

Brookhampton

The local war memorial. Such a small community lost so many. You can see a sliver of the hall to the right. Photo - January 2015

 

Broomehill

In front to the shire offices is the town's war memorial. Photo - December 2016

 

Bunbury

On Stirling Street is ANZAC Park which includes the Garden of Peace and the Bunbury War Memorial. This Memorial was unveiled on November 11th, 1924 by Colonel N. M. Brazier. Photo - December 2016

 

Carnamah

Chidlow

Chidlow's War Memorial located in the park in the centre of town. Photo - October 2018

 

Collie

In Collie, next to the Collie River is this park. As the sign says, it's the State Centenary Park. On the other side of the gate it proclaims 'Soldier's Park' so it serves as a double memorial - to the State Centenary in 1929, and also to past conflicts and to the locals who served in them. Cranbrook

Dawesville

Denmark

In the centre of town is this gleaming war memorial. Photo - October 2014

 

Dwellingup

At the front of the Community Centre on Del Park Road are these Memorial Gates. The plaque reads: "These Gates were erected by the RSL in 1947 as a Memorial to all those from this district who paid the supreme sacrifice during World Wars I and II. Lest We Forget". Photo - December 2020

 

Fairbridge

Entering the Fairbridge Village, the Colonnade was build in 1963 in honour of Fairbridgians who made the ultimate sacrifice during wars. An ANZAC memorial service is held here on the Sunday following each ANZAC Day each year.  Photo - April 2011

 

Fremantle

The Fremantle War Memorial atop Monument Hill. The monument was erected in 1929. The hill provides panoramic views of the City of Fremantle. Photo - June 2016

 

Geraldton

Atop Mount Scott overlooking the city is the HMAS Sydney Memorial. It is made up of The Dome of Souls (9 metres high), and The Stele (the vertical structure resembling standing stones). On 20th October 1941, the HMAS Sydney was located in the Sundra Straits where it encountered and engaged in battle with the German ship HSK Kormoran. Both ships were lost. All 645 men aboard the Sydney perished. This memorial was completed in 2008. Photo - September 2014

 

Geraldton

At the HMAS Sydney Memorial is this statue of a waiting woman, looking out to sea in vain, praying for the safe return of the Sydney. She symbolises the grief of all the wives, mothers and girlfriends of the 645 crew on the Sydney who never returned. The name of every crew member is etched in stone here. Visiting this site is a humbling experience. It is an amazing museum and memorial. Photo - September 2014

 

Gnowangerup

Gosnells

An avenue of splendid white roses leads up to the War Memorial in Pioneer Park, Gosnells. Photo - May 2011

 

Jennacubbine

In the centre of Jennacubbine is the war memorial. The trees in this area were planted by members of the Jennacubbine C.W.A. in June 1974 to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of their Association in Western Australia. Photo - July 2013

 

Jerramungup

Kukerin

The Peace Memorial Rose Garden on Stirling Highway in Nedlands was established in 1950. Photo - February 2010

 

Kings Park

The War Memorial in Kings Park in Perth. This photo was taken the day after ANZAC Day hence the many wreaths on the Memorial. Photo - April 2009

Manjimup

Northam

Immediately to the right of the Memorial Hall on Fitzgerald Street is the Northam War Memorial. Photo - October 2018

 

Northcliffe

The district war memorial. You don't have to spend a fortune to get the message across. Photo - October 2014

 

Pinjarra

On Pinjarra Road, this is the Shire of Murray war memorial which is located in front of the Shire offices. The Memorial was established in 1922 near the road bridge. It was relocated to its present site in 1964. Photo - August 2011

 

Quairading

The Quairading War Memorial. You can see the railway station building in the background. The people of Quairading have gone to great lengths to present the pictured memorial plus the adjacent Lone Pine Memorial and the decorative memorial frontage on a building across the road. Rockingham

On Flinders lane is the Rockingham War Memorial. The propeller, the cannon and the anchor serve to represent the three branches of the Australian armed forces - the airforce, army and navy. Photo - May 2015

 

Roelands

In the Roelands Progress Federation Grounds is the War Memorial commemorating locals who served in the forces during times of conflict. Photo - April 2013

 

Serpentine

Subiaco

On the corner of Rokeby Road and Hamersley Road in Subiaco is the War Memorial. The foundation stone was laid by Sir Francis Newdegate, who was Governor of Western Australia at that time, on 17th December 1922. The memorial was originally built to honour citizens of Subiaco who fell in World War I, but later included other conflicts. Photo - June 2012

 

Tambellup
