Ascot A north-east suburb of Perth off Great Eastern Highway, & near Belmont and Redcliffe and famed for its racecourse. In 1848 the suburb was named after the local racecourse, which was named after Lord Ascot. Ascot is located on the banks of the Swan River bounded on the east side by Great Eastern Highway. It stretches from west of the Garrett Road Bridge north to Ivy Street. All things equestrian. In the suburb is also the river island, Ron Courtney Island |

Ascot - Racecourse Ascot is horse town. It really is. I thought there was only the racecourse here but driving around the side streets I see horse training yards, veterinary clinics, equine provedores and other facilities for owners, jockeys and trainers. On reflection, this is not not surprising. This is a view of Ascot Racecourse grandstand looking across the track. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT001 |

Ascot - Racecourse There are a few entrances to Ascot Racecourse, this one is the Matheson Gate. It is located on Matheson Road. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT002 |

Ascot - Racecourse Probably the main entrance to Ascot Racecourse. This is the Grandstand entrance, perhaps not surprisingly, on Grandstand Road. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT003 |

Ascot - Western Australian Turf Club On the other side of Grandstand Road, across from the racecourse entrance, is this rather low-profile looking building which is actually headquarters to the Western Australian Turf Club. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT004 |

Ascot - Old Brickworks These chimney stacks are right next to the W.A. Turf Club building. Decades ago there was a brick works here and these stacks have been preserved. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT005 |

Ascot - Old Brickworks Not only have the chimney stacks been preserved, but so have a lot of the old kilns. Here is one, chimneys in the background, reflecting on life in another era. Photo looks quite good. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT006 |

Ascot - Ascot Inn Down at the end of Epsom Avenue is what used to be the rather agreeable Ascot Inn. Today is totally fenced off and seems to be undergoing major works. Hope it re-opens soon. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT007 |

Ascot - House Driving around the streets of Ascot this appealing house caught my eye. Housing here is a real mix of up-market dwellings to those which are decades old and perhaps a little run down. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT008 |

Ascot - Jetty at Swan River Ascot is bounded on one side by the Swan River. This jetty is on the river (obviously), just down from the Ascot Inn. This might be a good fishing spot? Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT009 |

Ascot - Gould Reserve Another view of the Swan River at Ascot. Here we are in the Gould Reserve adjacent to the eastern end of the racetrack. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT010 |

Ascot - Captain Cook Cruise A Captain Cook river boat cruises by on its way to Perth (past the Gould Reserve). These flat, wide vessels with minimal water displacement are ideal for wine cruises in the upper navigable waters of the Swan River. Photo - January 2011. Photos Ref: ASCT011 |

Ascot - Racecourse and Grandstand We were over the other side of the river in Bayswater and found this to be a good vantage point to get a shot of the grandstand and part of the track. In the foreground is the Swan River. Photo - July 2013. Photos Ref: ASCT012 |

Ascot - International Hotel This is how the former Ascot Inn looks today. It has been significantly re-modelled and extended and is not yet open for business. Construction appears to be in the final phases. This is a view of the front section of the hotel. The new name is the International On The Water Hotel. Photo - May 2014. Photos Ref: ASCT013 |

Ascot - International Hotel The rear of the new International On The Water Hotel, previously the Ascot Inn. Here is a view from the jetty on the Swan River. It seems that parts of the original inn have been retained, when I compare the centre structure and roofline with the picture I took four years ago. Photo - May 2014. Photos Ref: ASCT014 |
