Kondinin

The town of Kondinin is located some 275 kilometres east of Perth. It is medium size-town, a centre for services, retailers and government agencies for the surrounding farming district. The town is within its own Shire, which also encompasses the nearby towns of Hyden and Karlgarin. The railway arrived here in 1915, the same year the town was gazetted. Settlers were in the area earlier. Kondinin is a name of Aboriginal origin but the meaning is obscure

Kondinin - Town Hall

Around on Jones Street is the Kondinin Town Hall. The front section of the hall is very recent. It was opened in 2010. The rear of the hall, you can see the old brickwork, is decades older, dating back to 1934. April 2015. Photos Ref: KOND002

 

Kondinin - Holloway's Shop

Adjacent to the Town Hall is this old building constructed in 1925. This was originally Henderson's Newsagency. It was later a cafe, small goods shop, and then a billiards salon. More recently this has been used as Holloway's hardware. Atop is written K.W. & Y.L. Holloway, Builder & Supplier, Phone 891130. A six-digit phone number would go back to the 1970's. April 2015. Kondinin - Shops

Here is the main shopping area. This row of shops is on Gordon Street. This building contains six shops and was known as West's Shops, built between 1925 and 1928. April 2015. Photos Ref: KOND005

 

Kondinin - Hardware Store

This is the premises of Kondinin Hardware on Rankin Street. The business is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week. This appears to be the former Smeeds Commercial Bank, constructed in 1925. April 2015. Photos Ref: KOND006

 

Kondinin - Hostel

On Rankin Street is this building which is a former hostel. This was built in 1928. It has been known as Mon Repose Hostel and also Jermyn's Hostel. April 2015. Photos Ref: KOND007

Kondinin - Uniting Church

Uniting Church in Australia, Kondinin Church. The Foundation Stone was laid by Moderator Rev. A. C. Eadie, on December 8th, 1956. April 2015. Photos Ref: KOND015

 

Kondinin - Anglican Church

St Peter's Anglican Church. The Foundation Stone was laid by Ralph, Bishop of Bunbury, on July 29th, 1959. April 2015. Photos Ref: KOND016

 

Kondinin - Catholic Church

The former Catholic Church. It is in a rather sad state of repair and is currently up for sale. The Foundation Stone was laid by the Reverends R. Prendiville and P. Sheridan on August 15th, 1934. April 2015. Photos Ref: KOND017
